Services: Low Vision Rehabilitation Services
Vision Rehabilitation Services are available for people when their best corrected vision is insufficient for doing daily activities or specialty tasks such as reading, sewing, creating art, watching television, reading medication bottles, or driving. This may be due to vision loss from medical conditions, degenerative changes, congenital or genetic defects, and traumatic injuries.
Other people can benefit from Vision Enhancement Services if they are doing specialized work that requires visual devices beyond the functioning of regular glasses. This could be for dental hygienists, jewelry makers, artists and others who do small, detailed work.
Some Conditions that can lead to Low Vision:
Macular Degeneration is the #1 cause of blindness in people over the age of 70. It results from changes to the macula, a portion of the retina that is responsible for clear, sharp vision. Some common symptoms are distorted vision, a gradual loss of color vision, and a dark or empty area appearing in the center of vision.
Diabetic Retinopathy occurs in people with diabetes when there is damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina. Often there are no visual symptoms in the early stages. Some common symptoms are distorted vision and dark areas in the vision.
Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders thought to be caused by increased eye pressure leading to progressive damage to the optic nerve. The result is a slow loss of peripheral, or side, vision that is typically not noticed until significant damage has occurred.
How A to Z Eye Care Can Help
We are committed to providing high quality vision enhancement services and devices to our community. It is our goal to provide people the ability to complete daily and specialty tasks that were previously not possible. Our aim is to promote people’s independence, comfort and quality of life.
What is involved in the A to Z Eye Care Vision Rehabilitation and Enhancement Program?
• Vision Evaluation – A to Z doctors determine the tasks that are difficult and the amount of enhancement needed to do the desired tasks. The doctor then prescribes devices to assist the person with those tasks. The evaluation depends upon the patient having already received their yearly eye health and refractive examination. Vision rehabilitation tools work best in coordination with conventional glasses.
• Training With the Vision Rehabilitation Technician – The technician demonstrates the low vision devices and trains how to use them. The technician provides follow-up training through visits or phone conversations to answer questions and clarify the use of the devices.
Vision Rehabilitation and Enhancement Products
We have a variety of devices available to assist with daily and specialty tasks. These include: magnifying eyeglasses, telescopic spectacles, hand-held magnifiers, filters and electronic visual aids. Through assessments in the office, the doctor and vision rehabilitation technician will determine the best tool to perform the needed activity. The devices are task specific and usually more than one device is needed to fulfill various tasks.
