Our Doctors
Our practice has three wonderful optometrists! They are Marcus Appy, and Loren and Linda Azevedo. They share the philosophy of providing the best care for their patients utilizing advanced technology for evaluation of eye health and vision. In addition, they understand that by carefully listening in the exam room, more accurate diagnosis and better treatment can be achieved. Education is a crucial element of providing exemplary care, not only for staff and doctors, but also for patients. We work hard to explain the examination so that everyone understands their eyes and our recommendations.
Dr. Appy grew up in Arcata and graduated from Arcata High School in 1992. He went on to the University of Oregon where he completed a degree in biology in 1996. With a fascination with biological systems, he began his career studying marine and freshwater ecosystems. Marcus obtained a Master's degree from Oregon State University and worked as a fisheries biologist in Oregon and Washington for five years. He then realized his desire to pursue his passion for the visual system and returned to school to study Optometry.
Marcus graduated with Honors from Pacific University in May of 2009. He returned to Humboldt County and joined A to Z Eye care in 2009.
Marcus and his wife, Elizabeth, are thrilled to raise their family in the wonderful community where he grew up. He has enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, many of whom are patients at A to Z Eye Care. Elizabeth works for an environmental consulting company and is looking forward to learning about this unique part of the world. They have two beautiful daughters, Harper and Taylor who are two and four years old.
Marcus would like to thank everyone for welcoming his family back to Humboldt County and he is looking forward to serving this community.
Loren and his wife, Linda graduated from U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry in 1978 and 1981. They spent a year looking for the ideal place to live, and were happy to find what they considered to be the best area in the country, Humboldt County! In 1981, Loren and Linda started a practice in Arcata and also took over a Garberville practice from retiring Dr. Bill Madsen. In 1991, Loren and Linda built A to Z Eye Care, Humboldt County’s premier vision care office, in conjunction with Dr. Jim Barnes, who retired in 2003.
Loren and Linda have three children all of whom attended Jacoby Creek School and Arcata High before heading off to college and careers. They remain a large part of Loren and Linda’s spare time. John, Thomas, and Loren still compete in triathlons, while Katie and Linda’s passion is endurance horse riding.
In addition, Loren and Linda have been involved with Jacoby Creek School, Rotary Club, and St. Mary’s Church. In 1990, Loren and Linda enjoyed founding the Humboldt Tri-Kids Triathlon. They continue today as the primary sponsor. In 2010, Linda was honored as a Humboldt Hero by the local Red Cross. The same year, Loren and a staff optician, Jen, collected glasses locally and provided eye exams and eyewear to needy people in Ezetlan, Mexico.
Loren and Linda have greatly appreciated the vision care of their loyal patients, mostly considered friends, rather than patients! Thank you for your trust in us!
